Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (With A Better Recipe Below!)

Since Sexy Nerd had to work yesterday, while I got to lounge around the house, I thought it would be nice if he came home to some tasty doughnuts. I found the recipe here.

Oooh, ingredients!

The first step was to "scald" 1 cup of milk. I'm not sure that this actually made any difference whatsoever.

Next, the butter.
Yummy.

Melt, darn you!

Once the milk was thoroughly scalded, (pfft!) it was time to cool it down.

Thank goodness for YouTube when waiting for your originally cold milk to cool back down.
Go Britney!

Beat some eggs.

 Sift some flour.

Ooh, that falling flour is beautiful!
It's a pity that the sifter is covered in water spots.

Get everything mixed nicely.

The original Recipezaar recipe resulted in dough that was much too sticky to work with. Adding additional flour fixed the problem. But how was I going to get these doughnuts to look doughnuty? Sexy Nerd & I don't have any cookie cutters.
Seriously!

Clever? Oh yes!

Actually, the drinking glass and the shot glass didn't work well at all.

I had decided to skip cutting out the center and just make giant doughnut holes. However, I found the perfect solution when I took the lid off the oil bottle to fry these.

Oooooh!

Nearly done!
Just ignore that 1 goofy looking doughnut.

Even though I halved the recipe, I still ended up with waaaay too many doughnuts for just 2 people.
You can't tell from the photo, but that is a very deep Tupperware container!

Luckily, we have a hungry little Kitchen Pig to help.

These were yummy, but they took FOREVER to make! In the future, I'll stick with my tried and true doughnut recipe:

The Quickest, Easiest Doughnuts Ever:
The only way to get doughnuts faster is to go buy them.
Take one package of biscuit dough (Pillsbury works, but the cheap, $.25 packages work even better). Put each uncooked biscuit into a pan with hot oil. These usually cook pretty fast (about a minute or so each). Be careful not to get your oil too hot or you'll end up with doughnuts that are still doughy on the inside. Remove each doughnut from the oil and blot. A good next step is to toss them in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. These are also ideal for filling with tasty things like whipped cream, chocolate, and/or fruit.

  3. Hey! I found your blog on http://www.food.com. I can't wait to try out your recipes! I do have a question about this one though. I tried making doughnuts a couple days ago and they didn't come out all that great (which of course started my search for a better doughnut). The thing I have the hardest time with is the frying part. It doesn't look like you used a thermometer. So, how do I know when it's hot enough but not too hot? Also, is it better to use a pot or a pan?
    Thank you so much!
